Bodhi Heart

We excited to inform you about an inspiring project that Bodhi Heart will begin sponsoring this spring at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, the seat of the Karmapas.  We are in the process of creating a Health Care Clinic that will benefit monastics and lay people, both young and old, men, women and children in need of healthcare. This is a long term project that will take 2-4 years to establish.  The clinic has the blessings of the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche and is being coordinated with the administration of Rumtek monastery.  The initial part of this project begins this spring 2010 with our Exploratory Medical Expedition to Rumtek.

Donald RossLeading the group will be Dr. Donald Ross, a physician with over 30 years of medical experience including emergency room medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry.

Jay SacksDr. Jay Sacks, a family practice physician, also with over 30 years experience will join the group. Sisan KirchoffAccompanying them will be Susan Kirchoff, a registered nurse with over 35 years of nursing experience working in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and labor and delivery.
Acharya Tashi will also be helping on this initial visit. Acharya-la was in charge of Sangha Health and Well Being while he was studying at Rumtek Monastery, so the project is a continuation of his interest in this area.  The work of these four will be invaluable to the Tibetan refugees in and around Rumtek.  The medical team will using its own resources in order to fund this trip, so that all money raised will go directly for medical care.  Funds raised will go towards:

          1. Quality vitamins, ointments, and antibiotics
          2.  Medications
          3.  Medical equipment, supplies, and laboratory basics

Medications and equipment will be bought in India, in this way we will keep costs down and those who will be using the equipment and medicines will be familiar with those products of local origin.  Once the team is in India, they will become more knowledgeable about what supplies and medicines are most needed.

The medical team has consulted with those who have created medical clinics in Asia and have estimated that the funds needed to set up a basic clinic will be $10,000 U.S.  In addition, further funds will be needed to buy medications, supplies and laboratory basics.  In all, a total estimate of  $14,000 U.S. is needed for the full set up of the healthcare clinic.  This clinic will be an on-going Bodhi Heart project and we will keep you updated on its progress. As mentioned earlier, it will take 2-4 years to establish an ongoing clinic.

Bodhi Heart also continues to support many Tibetan children by sponsoring their school education, and helping monastics with their studies with such projects as the Library fund which bought 10 computers to further their education. We also recently bought a computer for our Bodhi Heart administrator in India, to aid in communications between Rumtek and Bodhi Heart America.

The Medical Clinic is part of the greater vision of Bodhi Heart to help as many Tibetan refugees at Rumtek as possible.  We are asking you to become a part of this exciting project by giving as generously as possible this holiday season!  All funds received will go directly to the creation of the medical clinic.  As always, thank you for your generosity!!

Yours in the vast vision of Bodhi Heart,

Providing for Monks, Nuns and Children

kids

Bodhi Heart was founded by The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche to help with the many needs of  Tibetan monastics and lay communities in South Asia.

This project provides direct financial assistance to Tibetan monks and nuns (both young and old) in South Asia, who are committed to continuing their study and practice of the pure traditions of the dharma. Donations supply individual monastics with books,

food, clothing and medical care. Monasteries, such as Rumtek in Sikkim, (the seat of the Karmapas)  have limited resources

and cannot fully support all of the young Tibetan refugees who seek their traditional training. These individuals may lack texts crucial for their studies and other basic necessities.

Bodhi Heart also supports lay Tibetan refugees in all areas of life, such as school tuitions, medical costs, books, and the daily expenses of life.   Schooling is a significant factor in the lives of these children and is often their only means to learn the skills that will allow them to be independent later in life, to assist other family members and their exile communities.

Bodhi Heart would like to thank those people who have sponsored Tibetan monastics and children this year. Your contributions are supporting young monks and nuns in the process of developing their full training in sila, samadhi, and prajna. Older lamas with serious medical conditions are receiving assistance as well. Several monks in three-year retreat will be supplied with food, warm clothes, and practice materials. Young children are being provided with funds for school tuition and books.

Because these individuals have meager resources, or perhaps none at all, your generosity has touched their lives in a fundamental way. Bodhi Heart extends to all of you sincere appreciation for your concern and kindness.

Vision Statement

DPR 5It is said that "true giving is true receiving." When we give genuinely to support the basic needs of impoverished children, provide education that will open doors to fresh starts and new opportunities, make medical care accessible to the sick and elderly-this indeed is the very best gift we can to give ourselves.

A gift in any amount can make a great difference in the lives of many people. Even a small donation will contribute toward the health and well-being of those who earnestly seek a means to fulfill their basic human potential.

Bodhi Heart provides such opportunities by dedicating its resources to the support of monastics, students, and the elderly in the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

It is only possible to accomplish these goals through your generosity and active interest. I would like to request your kind support of our efforts to relieve some of our world's most fundamental sources of suffering. Through our mutual intention, may the pain of illness be relieved and may education open all eyes to the genuine wisdom world.

Thank you in advance for your gift.
Please contact Bodhi Heart staff in your area to join us in this profound enterprise to overcome our world's suffering.

With appreciation,
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
