Western Teachers

The Mitra Council is the group of Western teachers appointed by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche in 2005 to provide leadership for the Practice and Study Paths of Nalandabodhi. Each of these teachers holds the title "Mitra," a Sanskrit word derived from kalyanamitra, "spiritual friend." To contact the Mitra Council or any of the Mitras, please email the Mitra Secretary

The Mitras are available to Nalandabodhi centers and members for:

•    Teaching programs
•    Personal practice interviews and study questions
•    Refuge vows
•    Bodhisattva vows
•    Reading transmissions for the preliminary practices ("ngöndro")
•    Wedding, funeral, and other ceremonial services

Karl Mitra small

Karl Brunnholzl is the prolific author and translator of several volumes on Indian and Tibetan Buddhism.   A physician extensively trained in Buddhist study and practice, he teaches frequently in North America and Europe.

Lee Worley has been an innovator and pioneer in the field of contemplative arts and education since Tibetan Buddhist practice communities appeared in the West. Her deep grounding in the practices of Vajrayana and Mahamudra support her experience-oriented teachings.

Mark Power is a certified Buddhist chaplain who has been a key leader in Nalandabodhi since its inception. He has studied intensively with Vajrayana teachers in the West for more than thirty years and calls on this experience to impart the Buddhist instructions for bringing wisdom and compassion into daily life. 

tyler mitra small Tyler Dewar has served as an oral and literary translator in Nalandabodhi and Nitartha Institute since 2000. He has traveled extensively with Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, translating and presenting his teachings for a variety of audiences around the world.
